Save Your Oakland Stories

In partnership with the Oakland History Center, GEMS recorded a dayof oral histories at the Oakland Main Library in 2023 with various members of the Oakland community. Recordings will be available in the library's online collections.

GEMS was also thrilled to participate in a panel hosted by The Oakland History Center: “Oral Historians in the East Bay, 2023 Fall History Series.” The panel discussion of East Bay oral historians offers a chance to learn from people who are collecting, sharing, and archiving community stories. You'll hear about a variety of local oral history projects, learn where to listen to them, and maybe even get inspired to make recordings of your own. Liam O'Donoghue hosted panelists Elena Botkin-Levy, Roy Chan, Shanna Farrell, Sue Mark, and Dr. Saturu Ned.
